In the early 1860's the French invaded Mexico. Under the command of French General Latrille, 4,500 troops began to march across Mexico with the goal to takeover and occupy Mexico City. In order to reach Mexico City the French had to pass through Puebla. The French expected no opposition from the Mexican people, but on May 5th, 1862 they encountered intense Mexican opposition in Puebla commanded by General Ignazio Zaragoza's army forced the French to retreat.
Although this was not the end of the war, it was a major turning point in the struggle against the French invasion.
Five years later the French finally admitted defeat and withdrew their troops from Mexico. To this day Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of defeating the French at Puebla and a tribute to the Mexicans that defended their homeland.
